This is a nice clean English made hand adze. It is marked "WM GREAVES & SONS SHEAF. WORKS ELECTROBORGIC STEEL NO. 2". This is a laminated steel process that offers superior cutting edges on edge tools. There is about 1 5/8" of laminated steel still left before the seam line. The cutting edge is sharp, though a bit uneven. There is no cracks in the steel, less than normal wear. The handle appears to be original, it is in good condition with a steel wedge inserted to hold it in place. The wedge has caused the wood to split inside the pocket of the tool, but it is strong and could be used as is. This spliting happens sometime on older tools as the wood shinks in size from dry air, the user can put the wedge forward to keep the head tight, causing the wood to split at the end. This is a very nice tool, with a rarely seen makers' name very clearly cast into it!
