This Amphora, or storage vessel, depicts the great Goddess of War Athena, probably training or helping two boxer athletes. Athena, daugher of Zeus, was one of the twelve great Olympian Gods and the patron diety of war, as well as craft and skills. This museum reproduction is from a piece originally made during the "Red-Figure Period", 530-400 B.C., original piece currently resides at the National Museum, Athens. Red Figure painting essentially inverted the older style of Black Figure painting - instead of painting black figures against a light background, the entire red vase was coated in a black varnish, except for the decorative human or animal figures which retained the reddish color of the vase. This allowed for greater detail in facial features and more expressive handling of muscles, draped clothing and other specific aspects. Preserving Cultural Heritage These fine reproduction Greek Vases are so beautifully made, the government of Greece inspects each piece to authenticate that they are not actual ancient works of art, but are in fact, reproductions. This inspection is verified by a small removable metal ring that comes attached to your vase. They are created using the same techniques as artists in Ancient Greece - modern day masters in Greece create the vases out of terra cotta, the same material the ancient artisans used.
