Up for bid is a framed and matted print by Florida artist Charles Rowe. It is a signed and numbered print (123/400). Am not sure when it was done. I've googled Charles Rowe found an article written by Dorothy A. Borders. I believe the print she is writing about below, is the same print as what I'm selling, different number. Taken from the "Backyard Birder: August 2006 Archives": " The Green Heron, seen at a distance, can appear almost blue and might be mistaken for some other small herons, but, if you are fortunate enough to get a good look at it up close, you will see a very colorful bird. It has bright yellow, almost orange, legs and feet. Its neck feathers are a rich chestnut color and its crown, which may or may not be raised in a bushy crest, is black. The back, which gives it its name, is glossed with green, sometimes with a bit of blue. The breast, while mostly chestnut, depending on the age of the bird, may be faintly streaked with white. Its beak is black and its large eye is yellow. I can describe the bird in detail because for many years a large portrait of it has hung on my wall. Several years ago, as my husband and I walked around a gallery in the mall, I admired a large, framed print hanging on the wall. It was a picture of the Green Heron, number 100 out of 400 numbered prints, by an artist named Charles Rowe . It showed the heron standing on a grayed log extending into the water, with his gaze intent on the water, which reflected the scene. It was a lovely and evocative picture, reminding me of many such scenes I had witnessed on the beaver pond near my parents' house when I was growing up. I admired the picture, Hubby made no comment, and we walked on by. Shortly after that, t was some occasion - I admit that I forget whether it was our anniversary, Mother's Day, or my birthday, but it was one of those. When I got up that morning and walked into the living room, the heron picture was hanging over our mantle! It remains one of my favorite gifts of all time and it still hangs on our wall - a tribute to a fine artist, a plucky and handsome bird, and my husband's thoughtfulness." And from the Charles Rowe Fine Art website:" I came late to working with color. Before learning watercolor I had worked in black and white, predominately in India ink. My drawing and photography at that time required me to learn to see in black and white so when I began to work with color it was quite literally an eye opener for me. In 1980 I moved to Florida, bought some watercolors, and began a career as a painter. An early Florida watercolor Working on a watercolor in 1984 When in art school in Colorado I used to hang out in the Denver Library perusing books on photography and art. One book in particular caught my attention, Fenwick Lansdown's Birds of the Eastern Forest. T was a quality in his bird paintings that appealed to me that I wanted to capture in my own work. Later I bought one of his books and when I had my watercolors I copied verbatim a painting he had done of a red headed woodpecker to see how he handled the paint. It gave me a starting point for beginning my own work. I actually did pretty well as a bird painter. I was included in the Birds in Art exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausau Wisconsin in '90,'91, and '92. The Birds in Art exhibit is the premier exhibition of bird art; artists are chosen from around the world to attend. Each has a single painting in the exhibit and most artists attend the opening in Wausau Wisconsin. My first year I exhibited next to Roger Tory Peterson and in another exhibition I got to meet Fenwick Landsdown. The people at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum have much to be proud of; Birds in Art is a very good thing.
