Here's a very rare piece of early Depression-era glassware, which was made by the Lancaster Glass Company of Lancaster, Ohio. Lancaster Glass was founded in 1908 by a man who had previously been the president of Fostoria Glass; Lancaster came under control of the Hocking Glass Company in 1924 and continued production under the Lancaster name until 1937. According to my reference, Lancaster's green color was introduced in 1925 (so I've put the dates of 1925-1937 in the title, since that's about as best I can figure it). I'm also calling this 'rare', because I know I've never had a piece of it before now, and it's not a pattern that you see very much of. My reference (Weatherman's Colored Glassware fo the Depression Era - 2), dubs this design as "Sphinx"; whether Lancaster has a real name for it or not, I don't know (any expert advice on any aspect of this piece would be appreciated). This bowl is about 4-7/8" tall at the sides, and is about 11-5/8" across at the top. The circular base is about 3-3/4" in diameter. The piece is very nice shape - no chips, nicks, cracks, flakes or fleabites anywhere - holding it up to the light, I see a couple of scratches on the inside towards the top, but they're not something that's going to be seen in the normal course of events (i.e. unless you're holding the thing up to the light looking for them) read more
