Exquisite Griffin Hill Smith Early Etruscan Majolica Dish/Tray I love Early Etruscan Majolica and this piece is no exception. Came from a local auction in the Midwest and is probably one of the largest and finest Griffin Hill Smith's I have seen. The condition is superb, the glaze tones are excellent, and the leafy detailing is intricate and fine. It's simply a lovely piece of Majolica, appropriately marked, well-crafted with mastery. Stunning. Measures: 12" Long by 9 1/2"W by 1 3/4"H Weight: 1lb 14.6oz T is a small glaze chip to the rim of the dish which I have photographed. It is old and has smoothed over the years. T are no other apologies or unwarranted markings to the piece that I am able to detect. T are no cracks or repairs. The overall condition is wonderful. It certainly could use a soft cleaning which I have not done. I am selling this piece exactly as purchased from auction. What engages me to this piece is the richness of the glaze tones. Generous pools of lush leafy greens to sage, mustard bands of yellow, chocolate mocha and tawny browns make for a nice contrast to the pastel shades of pinks. The back is awash in a warm celadon tone. Very pleasing. Nice application of glaze throughout. I love the detailing of the leaf motif. The way the glaze naturally seeps into the deep veining of the leaf design. Very organic and exactly what one would expect from a fine piece of quality Etruscan. The handle is well-contoured and nicely shaped. Has a lovely organic feel in the hand. Weighty and perfectly balanced. Smooth to the touch. Just feels solid and true in the hand. Think this Majolica piece would be an exceptional and aesthetically pleasing addition to any Majolica collection of the Era. If you have any questions or wish additional pictures, I am happy to help.
