Grimaldi-Siosa Line: A fold-out interiors brochure for the immigrant ship ASCANIA, issued in the 1950s when the rebuilt vessel entered service. Previously she had sailed as Transports Maritimes FLORIDA of 1926. This rare English language brochure shows both First and Tourist class areas. The interior design is colorful mid-century Italian modern with remnants of past French glory showing through in ornate woodwork. Thirteen photos in color cover public rooms, cabins, and the pool. A large portrait shows that the renovated ship was well-disguised from her humble 1920s origins. In "Passenger Liners Italian Style", ship historian Bill Miller describes the ASCANIA crowded immigrant sailings. Europeans looking for a new life in Venezuela filled much of the outbound voyages. Often they were so broke that they couldn't afford a drink at the bar. Return voyages often were packed with Jamaicans seeking work in the U.K. This group was especially rowdy and occasionally the crew had to use fire hoses to maintain order. The ship was not air conditioned so many passengers slept on deck rather than in stifling cabins. In her final years the ASCANIA was used for cheapie Mediterranean cruises. She hit the breakers at age 42 in 1968. The brochure is in excellent condition. I SHIP WORLD-WIDE AND WILL COMBINE PURCHASES TO LOWER POSTAGE. Be first in read more
