Postal History Awesome group of about 12 letters and stampless folded letters written by pioneers in WISCONSIN and sent to Miss Martha J. Gay - both in Boston, Massachusetts and Kenosha, Wisconsin. These date from about 1848 to 1855. Several of the letters originated in Kenosha (Sarah Davies) and also A.A. Dickerson in Wheatland, WI., Joe & Mary Farnsworth, William Russell in Tallmadege (not sure if this was WI or another state, maybe Ohio) and then one from Eureka, WI and another from Waukau in Winnebago, WI. These are long general family letters, two talk of California fever (young men leaving Wisconsin to pursue their fortunes in pursuit of California gold), one writer compares the risk of leaving for gold to staying put and getting the fever and dying (probably yellow fever), writers talk of travel through Ohio, trips to Chicago, buying and working land for farms, early Wisconsin banking references, weddings, life & times etc etc.... This grouping should be a goldmine for a Wisconsin history buff! None of the letters have postal markings - some are folded like stampless letters and others were removed from envelopes that no longer exist. We've tried to give you a representation on the scans. This description is based on a rather short review on my part - but more study will no doubt reward you ! Good luck on the bidding!.
