lot of 10 items. Includes Sickles, Daniel Edgar (1825-1914), Maj. Gen., USA. ALS, 2pp, 5 x 8` on U.S. Legation to Spain letterhead, Madrid (Spain), Nov. 1, 1873. Addressed to Lew Wallace. Concerns a copy of Wallace`s book (romance) that he sent to Sickles. Sickles has several `claims to fame,` among them being the first to successfully use a plea of `temporary aberration of mind` to win acquittal on charges of murder. Sickles shot Philip Barton Key (Feb. 1859), son of Francis Scott Key, because of attentions Key was paying to Mrs. Sickles. He also was instrumental in securing Central Park for New York in 1852. The rest of his career is somewhat less glorious. He did raise the Excelsior Brigade at the onset of the Civil War, and rose through the Union ranks to commander of the 3rd Corps, until he lost half his troops and his right leg at Gettysburg, and subsequently his command. He had served with the U.S. legation in London before the war, but declined a latter position in Holland. He was appointed minister to Spain in 1869, but apparently took a rather heavy-handed approach, finally resigning in Dec. of 1873. He became active in politics, including Tammany Hall, and lost the position of chairman of New York State monuments commission to accusations of mismanagement of funds. A checkered career at best. Also mounted on same sheet as Sickles` letter is clipped signature of `H. Dufferin` (Lord), Canada`s 3rd Governor General. PLUS Hawley, J(oseph) R(oswell), Brig. Gen., USA, (1826-1905). ALS, 1p, 6.5 x 8.75`, has been trimmed (apparently to fit mounting page), Senate Chamber letterhead, Washington (DC), Dec. 3, 1891. Addressed to Lew Wallace. Concerns a letter of recommendation that Hawley filed at Wallace`s request on behalf of `young Lossing` (possibly related to Benson) for a Naval position. After the war, Hawley served a term as Governor of CT, as well as a few Congressional terms representing that state. Also on this page is clipped signature `Howard` on line above `Maj. Gen`l. and Adj`t. Gen`l.` (Does not appear to be O.O.`s signature. Possibly a later Howard since letter is 1890.) AND Sheet of heavy paper with 6 calling cards, 5 signed: J.D.G. Nelson; T(homas) A. Morris (1811-1904, Brig. Gen.); O. B. Hora? (or Horn?); A(bram) W. Hendricks (1822-1887), C.W. Major, Indiana House of Reps., nephew of Thomas, William, and John Hendricks; J.M. Butler; and printed card of A(ndrew) G(allatin) Porter, Governor and Representative from Indiana.
