You are bidding on a group of 5 very old hay / straw bale hooks. 4 of the hooks have wooden handles (3 rounded, 1 hexagonal), the other hook is all iron. These were hand tools that were essential to farmers and livestock keepers (still are!) to help with moving bales of hay and straw. Instead of having to pick up the bales by the strings or wires (many times you can't get hold of them, particularly wires), you swing the hook into the bale so it "catches" and simply pick up one end of the bale by the hook and drag it to wver it's being moved to. Bales can be close to 100 lbs today, but are usually lighter, and these hooks make moving several hundred bales in a few hours ALOT more easy. These hooks were usually made by the farmer who needed to use them, or by their local smithy. This is the reason t is so much variety in size, style, shape, materials, design, etc. available to us today! The hook that has the hexagonal wooden handle also features flat sides in the metal shank down into and including the hook, some of the flat sides appear to be hammered.
