Background: I recently acquired a huge harlequin antique Chinese porcelain tea service, all pieces decorated with the Imperial yellow birthday pattern and marked with the Guangxu Emperor’s six character reign mark in kaishu script. I have split the set up into manageable lots and will be selling them progressively over the next few weeks. Description: A beautifully enameled antique Chinese porcelain 3 piece tea set, comprising tea pot, sugar bowl and jug, and all decorated with the “birthday” pattern. The pattern varies, some pieces having a central long life (Shou) character surrounded by waves, some with a key fret (thunder pattern) border, but all have four gilded roundels containing Chinese characters. Please see the photos to see the pattern variant on this lot. All pieces bearing the iron red 6 character Guangxu (1875 to 1908) Imperial reign mark (excluding the drip tray). Size: The tea pot is approximately 110mm (4.4 inches) high x 190mm (7.6 inches) long Dating: Guangxu (1875 to 1908) mark and period. Condition: No cracks and no restoration. There is a small chip to the inside lip of the sugar bowl (see last photo). It is concealed by the lid and is barely noticeable.Minor firing faults, including slight discoloration to the sugar bowl lid, and expected signs of wear to gilding.
