Background: I recently acquired a huge harlequin antique Chinese porcelain tea service, all pieces decorated with the Imperial yellow birthday pattern and marked with the Guangxu Emperor’s six character reign mark in kaishu script. I have split the set up into manageable lots and will be selling them progressively over the next few weeks. Description: A beautifully enameled pair of antique Chinese porcelain saucer dishes, all decorated with the “birthday” pattern. The pattern varies, some pieces having a central long life (Shou) character surrounded by waves, some with a key fret (thunder pattern) border, but all have four gilded roundels containing Chinese characters. Please see the photos to see the pattern variant on this lot. Both pieces bearing the iron red 6 character Guangxu (1875 to 1908) Imperial reign mark. Size: Saucer 146mm (5.84 inches) diameter aprox. Dating: Guangxu (1875 to 1908) mark and period. Condition: No chips, no cracks and no restoration. Minor firing faults, and expected signs of wear to gilding. Comment: Rarely does a set of this quality come on the market. Ten years ago I sold a similar set on eBay, the plates alone selling for around USD$650. There can be little question that the porcelain in this service was made and decorated at the Imperial factory in Jingdezhen, as witnessed by the reign marks being in rotation with the design on the front. Probably made to special order. I have no idea how much these will sell for today, so they are offered with a ridiculously low starting bid, no reserve and no Buy Now. Stands are not included. We will happily combine pieces to save on shipping, where that is practicable. This design appears to have been made almost exclusively in the Guangxu reign (1875 to 1908), and is of a comparable quality to the great porcelain made in the earlier Kangxi, Qianlong and Jiaqing reigns. It should appeal to collectors of any of the Chinese arts; ceramics, jade, lacquer, robes, bronze, Peking glass etc. Ref: 1700/28/23 & 24 Postage Estimates: Australia : USD$13.00 U.S.A & Asia (including China ): USD$27.00 U.K. & Europe: USD$30.00 Rest of the world: USD$33.00 Insurance: 2% of the combined cost plus delivery. Payment: We accept PayPal, cashier’s check and Visa or Mastercard.
