GULF COAST TRAVEL BROCHURE, early 1900s. Florida, New Orleans, Pensacola, Louisville & Nashville Railroad “The Gulf Coast in Winter, New Orleans to Pensacola” is an original travel and tourist brochure produced by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad around 1911. It is a 7-fold brochure that opens to 32 x 9 inches and folds to 4 x 9 inches. The front and back cover depict the same color illustration – a classic early twentieth-century man and woman enjoying their leisure time along the coast. The opening pages of the brochure are also in color and show serene images of golfing, fishing, and sailing under the title “The Gulf Coast – Historical – Romantic.” At the center is a full-spread fold-out color map of the Gulf Coast stretching from New Orleans east across Mississippi and Alabama to Florida, and showing the route of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The last page is a two-color map of the South showing railroad routes from the Gulf north to Kentucky. The brochure contains 40 pages of text and black-and-white photos that invite the traveler to enjoy the Gulf Coast splendor. Depicted are leisure activities, historic places, cities, streets, the countryside, and hotels such as the St. Charles in New Orleans and the Great Southern in Gulfport, Mississippi – 38 photos in all.
