A W & L E GURLEY TRANSIT WITH BOX AND TRIPOD 1885 A very nice Transit that is in very good condition with a very nice overall patina. Everything works as it should on this transit and all bubbles and screws are present. The box contains one adjustment pin, a chaining pin and what appears to be the original plumb bob. The Tripod is in excellant condition and displays very well with the Transit mounted on it. The telescope is 11" without the sunshade attached. The dust cover for the telescope is missing. The compass is 6" in diameter with a 5" needle. The needle keeper works very well. The box is in fantastic condition and has been refinished at some time in its past. I can see tiny scratches on the screws that hold the box together which indicates to me that sandpaper has been used on it. The inside of the box appears to be untouched. The top of the box looks to be walnut instead of mahogany. This is an oddity that I haven't seen before, but I have read that there was a shortage of the imported mahogany during this time period. The box measures 12-1/2" x 9" x 15". This has been a difficult transit to accurately date. The virtual Museum of Surveying tells me that the Troy NY was moved to the North end of the compass in 1880, but clearly it is at the south end of this compass. Gurley went to the spring opposed tangent screws in 1885, which this transit has. I have a photograph of the Troy NY showroom from 1887 that has a transit on display that appears to be identical to this one. Maybe someone that knows a lot more than me about this will be able to help with the correct date of this instrument. This transit could be used in the field today with a cleaning and calibration. I have set a very low starting price with no reserve on this transit, box and tripod. When the auction is complete I will email you with the exact cost for shipping and insurance according to your preference. I have added $15.00 handling to this item to cover the cost of packing materials.
