(every other page is a Full page Engraving!) Printed in 1880 by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Company (London, Paris and New York). Approx. 200+ pages in length ! Printed on fine quality paper and printed on one side of the page only! Each full page plate is accompanied by a descriptive text page opposite the engraving which describes the plate and what the image illustrates!! Bound in heavy mustard yellow decorated cloth with beveled edges and stamped in black and Gold Gilt on front cover and spine and the Gilt is in BEAUTIFUL condition!!! Rear cover blind stamped with pattern. All page edges also Beautifully Gilt in Gold! Green patterned endpapers. Previous owners inscription on front blank endpage dating to 1880 !! Large & heavy book !! Some light rubbing/wear along edges with some minor spotting on covers. Some minor occasional foxing. Green patterned endpapers creased otherwise nice (see pics). EXCEPTIONAL Condition !!!! The Contents are SUPERB !!! VERY SCARCE !! in this nice of condition !!! T is not enough room to show all of the engravings, so these photos only show a small portion of the Wonderful illustrations in this book !! A VERY BEAUTIFUL copy which would make a prized addition to ANY library !!! Exceptional condition for its age !!!!! This book is NOT ex-library and has NO remainder marks !! * Additional Information * Gustave Dor e was an Alsacian artist who specialized in book illustrations. Born in Strasbourg, France, on January 6, 1832, he began his artistic career in Paris when he was only 15 years old. His drawings and illustrations were ground breaking and very popular, although he never won the acclaim of the artistic elite in France. In his later years, he spent much time in London, w he also opened a very popular gallery. He died on January 23, 1883, at the age of 51. Dor e is probably most famous for his depictions of numerous scenes from the Bible, but he also produced illustrations for many other books, including Milton, Dante, La Fontaine, Don Quixote, Baron Munchhausen, etc. is your chance to own a VERY SCARCE, highly desirable piece of literary history listed for much more elsew online.
