With WII raging full force in two hemisps, The Delaware & Hudson Railroad purchased 15 Class K-62 Northerns from the American Locomotive Company in 1943. These locos were assigned road numbers 300 through 314. Designed for both Passenger & freight, these were dual service locomotives were equipped with 24.5 inch bore by 32 stroke cylinders, eight 75" drivers. The boiler pressure of 285 PSI of super heated steam developed a tractive effort 62,040 pounds. We believe the K-62 was a reference to its just over 62,000 lbs of Tractive effort Tipping the scales at 837,300 lbs, these locomotives were at first assigned to freight service, likely for the pleasure of the wartime production board as well as its 75 moderate driver size but these coal fired Northerns were used regularly on the New York to Montreal passenger trains.
