An historic original half plate size ambrotype photograph of the home and office of Harm Jan Huidekoper in Meadville, Pennsylvania, who came to America circa 1795 to represent the Holland Land Company. In the image, his home is to the right, and the large building to the left is the office of the company. In 1792 a group of Dutch investors from Amsterdam had purchased over 3,000,000 acres of land along the Genesee River in western New York and Pennsylvania, from Robert Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, in what became known as the "Holland Purchase". The company opened offices in Batavia, New York, and Meadville, Pennsylvania, and began to sell property to eastern settlers and immigrants. At the time this ambrotype photograph was taken, circa 1850, the home was owned by Reverend Frederic Huidekoper, the youngest son of the original builder. Size 4" x 5 1/4" in original brass mat, no case present, very good condition but there is a vertical crack in both pieces of glass, which could easily be minimalised or possibly be repaired. An historic outdoor image accompanied by a note of provenance by a member of the family from which it was purchased years ago....We sold this photograph about a month ago but could not successfully conclude the transaction with the buyer......Guaranteed original.......$6.00 priority mail read more
