This auction is for one half pound (8 ounces) of unsorted small rough sapphire gem gravels from Rock Creek (Gem Mountain) near Philipsburg, Montana. This material averages about 50% small gem clear sapphires, with the balance comprised of garnets, rutile, hematite, and other heavy minerals. Upon sorting, a half pound will yield an average of 500 to 600 carats of small gem quality rough sapphires ranging in size from about 1.5 mm up to about 4 mm maximum dimension on some of the oval shaped pieces. Average size is about 3 mm. The sapphires are nearly all water clear gem quality in pastel shades of green, yellow, blue, pink, orange, white, etc. Heat treating will turn them rich blue or intensify the fancy colors. Probably too small for most US faceters, but these would be great for overseas cutting and will yield small accent size stones up to 2.5 mm round. Photos show one half pound as sold, plus a close up of 6 sample stones selected to show the potential color and size range. I measured these with digital calipers and posted the measurements in the photo to show the exact size range of the sapphires. I bought this material several years ago with the intent of sending it overseas for heating and cutting.
