Extra Clean Hamilton 35 Size 21 Jewel Model 22 Deck Watch Running Order Complete with Both Boxes Shown in the photos is an extra clean 35 size 21 Jewel Hamilton Model 22 Deck Watch clock in good operating condition keeping good time complete with Inner and Outer Box. These WW II timepieces were adjusted to 6 positions although, for the most part, like the ships chronometer, maintained in one. The watch is in a base metal keystone flat case with a screw on bezel and back. The serial number by the balance cock reads 2F11535 The case is marked at the back “Bureau of Ships – US Navy – Chronometer Watch” also with the markings “N3328 – 1942”, 3328 probably being the number of this model 22 made with 1942 the date of manufacture. This was a Military Specification item and with these identifying numbers if anything went wrong the exact people involved in its manufacture or parts supply could be tracked down for evaluation or further refinement of the process. This is one of the most finely adjusted watches ever made by Hamilton . Please note the very fine extra hight grade rack and snail regulator good for rate change in the huindreths of a second. The deck watch was made to run for more than 2 days, but, like the chronometer was wound every day ay the same time to power the balance off the same stretch of spring, a more or less constant force, even though refinement in the adjustment of fine mechanical watches kept them exact even as the spring ran down. I’ve read that Hamilton used a 60 Inch long mainspring in these watches to insure this more steady force. Each day at the same time the sailor in charge of the duty would check the deck watch against the chronometer and then check all the clocks on the ship against the deck watch, resetting them as needed. How to set the hands is on the inner box (push in pin to pull out the locked stem). The strap is still there and loops over but the flap tip is off, but in the box. Never pick up a box like this with the strap. All this being said the Hamilton Model 22 21 Jewel near mint deck watch with winding indicator, adjusted to 6 positions, with both boxes is being sold As Is, in good running order with a mint dial, and very clean hands. I can’t say when last it was cleaned so if you plan to run it continuously I recommend cleaning and/or at least oiling. For show and tell it’s probably good for another hundred years. If you have anything to add, questions, or more photos are desired please do not hesitate to ask or call it to my attention.
