for your collecting pleasure we offer an excellent hallmarked Roycroft hammered copper candlestick with original silver wash finish. This early Roycroft candlestick clearly exhibits the fine design elements that the nascent American Arts and Crafts movement was producing at the beginning of the last century. The Roycroft hallmark places the pieceâe(tm)s date of origin at about 1910, when this groundbreaking style of design was well established.
The Arts and Crafts movement embraced the notion that the everyday needs of life from architecture to art to household items should be handcrafted by artists and artisans, and that art and craftsmanship should be available to the general populace. The movement was also influenced by proponents of a return to a simpler time of Medieval purity of form and line, focused on and derived from nature. Other influences were from European Art Nouveau, the Vienna Secessionist period, Classical and natural forms, with a dash of Japanese sensibility added to the mixture for good measure. The result was distinctly American Arts and Crafts, together with the development of the idea that a room or house should be decorated as a whole in one continuous, cohesive style rather than the indiscriminate Victorian style of collecting anything and everything, then displaying it all at once in a haphazard jumble. This renaissance of art and philosophy would break all connections to the Victorian style but wouild reconnect to classical times, bringing down the barriers between the fine arts and the applied arts. Arts and Crafts was more than a mere style. It was a way of thinking about modern society and new production methods, and an attempt to redefine the meaning and nature of art, or work, and of one's total lifestyle. From that time on, it was the duty of art to not overlook any everyday object, no matter how utilitarian it might be. This proficiency in more than one facet of art became a defining feature of the Arts and Crafts movement, an approach that was (and by many still is) considered completely new and revolutionary. The Roycroft shops specialized in hand-wrought books, furniture, lamps and metalware, ceramics, and decorative works during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Led by Elbert Hubbard , this was something of a Utopian artist's community w employees took classes, played the piano, and participated in sports as part of their daily routine at the Roycroft campus. Hubbard was a philosopher, writer, artist, and astute businessman who has been both loved and reviled throughout the years. Roycroft copper items were made in a small shop staffed with, at most, about thirty craftsmen. Pursuant to the revolutionary principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Roycroft items were intended to be beautiful, well made, useful objects for the home designed to be used daily and to last a lifetime (and beyond). For this reason, Roycroft copper is recognized today as an important part of the history of 20th century American design. To own a piece of Roycroft is to own a little slice of American history distilled from this lively, exciting era. This beautiful and rare piece represents the epitome of the Roycroftâe(tm)s talent and capabilities of its copper shop under the direction of Hubbardâe(tm)s principal coppersmith, Karl Kipp, one of the few master metalsmiths of the era. The design and execution of this work are flawless: the design is simple yet exquisitely elegant, while the execution is masterful and precise, representing the finest essence of the Arts and Crafts philosophy. This item is new to the market from a private collection and would be a cherished accent to the bungalow, cottage, or manse. The condition of this example is excellent; it is a superb design and in great condition for its age with no dents, dings, or apologies. Very rare form, signed with early impression of the orb and cross, riveted with copper, hand hammered copper candlestick with its original silver wash beautifully intact, circa 1910, exhibiting excellent R...
