For auction here is a fine Sterling Silver Sauce Boat which carries both Hanau Pseudo-Hallmarks and London import marks for 1896. From a little research on Google it appears the Hanau silver trade was not regulated by an administrative body and the marks used would often resemble older marks to fit the style of the piece produced, the makers mark on this piece CoT appears on one list of Hanau makers but is not identified, the importers mark, WM is ascribed to William Moering a ‘Foreign Agent’ between 1892 and 1903. The Sauce Boat is in very good condition with no damage that I can find, the outside has cleaned up well and has no dents or noticeable surface marks just age related wear, the inside is clean and still has some very pale gilding though this is a bit worn in places. It is profusely decorated in high relief with roses and scrolls, each side has a rural scene with little Putti or Cherubs and the feet are capped with winged heads. Dimensions are approximately 170mm maximum length, 75mm across the ‘belly’, 83mm high to the top of the handle and 75mm high to the top of the spout, the weight on my postal scales is 181 grams. The import marks show WM for William Moering, the Lion passant for Sterling Silver, date letter ‘a’ for 1896, ‘F’ denoting foreign silver and the Leopards head for London assay office, the Hanau marks show CoT an unidentified Hanau maker, a Pseudo Augsburg mark, and one more I cannot identify. UK Post 1 st class £2.25, European Union airmail £3.50 and Worldwide airmail £5.50.
