Snappy Auctions Payment - Shipping - Returns - About Us Hand Carved Juniper Wood Large Mouth Bass Folk Art Up for grabs is a One of a Kind Hand Carved Large Mouth Bass . This amazing piece was created by a local folk artist named Gene Naugher who put roughly 300 hours into making it. He entitled it "Out of a Stump It Came" because it was made out of a 100+ year old juniper tree trunk. It is museum quality with incredible features and detail and the local museum appraised it within the last 5 years. It consists of two pieces; the fish and the stump/base so the fish can actually be removed. Originally, it was one complete piece but the artist later separated it. The voids in the piece are all natural (splits, knot holes, etc.) and the artist left them there and carved around them. We were absolutely amazed when we first saw this carving and although we've included lots of pictures to show its true beauty they really don't do it justice. You really have to see this up close to understand the size, scale and detail that was put into this. An 18-pound bass meticulously crafted from red heart juniper appears realistic enough to be swimming in a lake. The fish is a three-dimensional work, showing complete details from the front, back and sides. “I’d been thinking about doing it for some time. I was fortunate to find a perfect stump in the woods,” Gene Naugher explained. The wood almost appears to have come alive in his steady hands as the craftsman preserved its natural beauty. The knots and grain patterns are part of the bass, adding to its realism. Fins and gills are carved into the wood and the bass has glass eyes. Naugher spent more than 100 hours, delicately working with a carving knife and rotary sander. The sander resembles a dentist drill but with more pleasant results. Naugher calls his piece “out of a stump, it came.” The bass’ open side fits perfectly on a stump, adding to its effect. Although he has between 25-30 mounded, stuffed animals in his collection, this is his initial effort with wood. “I was pleasantly surprised. The finished product was much better than I could imagine,” Naugher said. He’s also received positive comments, he said from the Columbus Museum and Columbus College. Making animals has been a hobby for eight years. It started when his daughter Andrea, 12, asked him to make her a turtle from play dough. “I think the result surprised both of us. It really looked like a turtle,” said Naugher. Making things has since become family fun for Andrea and her younger brother Andrew, 8. Naugher also visits schools, encouraging the kids to see what they can make. “I didn’t start until I was 40. If they have a mind’ eye (can picture an animal then make it), it’s an opportunity to begin at a younger age.” Naugher said. He coated the bass with seven coats of polyurethane, giving a smooth, glossy finish. Naugher hopes his bass will end up in the Pro Bass Shop in Atlanta.“It’s the largest bass fishing equipment outlet in the United States. I think it would be a great home for the display,” Naugher said.
