This is an amazing stone carving, translucent pale green. It belonged to a lady who lived a very long and well-travelled life, and we inherited it when she passed on last month. She bought it when she went to China, probably 40 or 50 years ago, and it sat on her mantle for decades. She was a remarkable human being, living independently right up until the end, although entirely deaf. She felt that this bird was one of her most important personal possessions, perhaps because she had some of the same tough delicacy herself. It's hard to imagine how a stone carver could even work stone in this manner, creating the slender legs of the birds and the petals of flowers so thin that light passes right through them. We don't know its worth, or exactly what type of stone it's made from. It resembles the stone that other sellers are calling serpentine jade, but we understand that the authenticity of jade is important to collectors and we have no expertise here. It's just a very pure looking translucent pale green. It has been well looked after, and has no breaks or chips. The statue stands about 9 1/2 inches tall with its custom made wooden stand. We have a tiny house in the woods and no mantle for it to sit on, so we're putting it for sale. We hope someone will take it into their home and enjoy it for a long time.
