Rare Hand Carved Silver Chiang Mai Thailand Hill Tribesmen Tobacco or Opium Pipe Museum quality piece. According to my research, this pipe was made by the Hill Tribesmen of Chiang Mai Thailand, famed for their opium pipes and silvers crafting. It measures approximately 17-1/2" in length. Marked in the silver near the tip, although I have no way of identifying the mark. Wood carries a magnificent patina, and the stem is completely wrapped in an ornate silver - which I believe to be nearly pure silver. This is a used pipe in exceptional condition. I did find what looks to be an almost identical pipe in the archives at the University of Iowa ( http://www./scua/msc/tomsc900/msc870/thompsontravel.html ), where it has been identified as a Chiang Mai opium pipe. This is a no-reserve auction.
