is a Hand Carved Wooden Cigar Store Indian by World Famous Jim Marbutt. He carved this Indian in 2005. It has very fine detail which shows the pride he take's in his work. This Cigar Store Indian is 30" High just the right size for inside the home. This Indian has never been outside always displayed inside. He is carved out of Sassafrass wood and signed on the back part of the base. As with all Natural wood they are subject to having cracking and knott holes, ect. This is a very special Indian and one of a kind. is some information on Jim Marbutt. Jim Marbutt was born, raised and still lives in rural Chattanooga county in Northwest Georgia.
He is 37 years old and has been carving with a chainsaw for the last 12 of those years. Of course he has been "whittling" since he was old enough to have a knife. He attended public school in his hometown w his best subject was ----You guessed it ---art. His high school art teacher, Mr. John Turner was somewhat of a rebel himself. He made Jim and a couple of other talented youngsters believe that a living can be made as an artist. After several years of doing folk art with wood, painting and drawing, his work became somewhat boring to him and it was none too profitable. On a trip to Tennessee with his companion, Maggie, Jim met Mr. L.D. cooper. A noted chainsaw carver himself, he took the time to talk with Jim and introduced him to the idea of whittling with a chainsaw. Jim returned home all excited and headed straight for the pawnshop to look for a chainsaw. What he found was a huge awkward contraption that sounded like a runaway train and created a low hanging fog of smoke ----BUT IT WORKED!! Quite a few logs later, Jim came up with his first recognizable cigar store Indian. That same old Kawliga still proudly guards the fireplace in his parents' home. Twelve years of hard work have paid off. Jim has broadened the scope of his work to include a wide range of styles and techniques. He now has more than enough work to keep him busy. He also enjoys doing craft shows and hanging out with other carvers. Jim is an easygoing, fun loving country boy who loves nature and respects all living things. He does on occasion show his temperamental side. If you don't believe it just ask Maggie. Of course being the father of a teenage son--a rerun of himself, who is also named Jimmy--sometimes takes its toll. Jim and his best friend, Booger the dog, live just across the street from his shop. He lives in the same house w he spent so many days on the porch with his Granddaddy whittling as a child. He enjoys spending time with family, traveling and carving. His one ambition in life is to CARVE MORE,CARVE BIGGER and CARVE BETTER.
