I met Matsuo San at a small temple market that features the work of various local artisans. I couldn't help but notice the display of silk scarves from a distance, such vibrant colors and gorgeous shibori work, and each one different than the next. We chatted for a few minutes; he was surrounded by a crowd of appreciative customers that day and I didn't want to take up too much of his time, and my less than stellar Japanese ability didn't help matters much. I did manage to get his card before leaving though, and soon after made an appointment to go to his house and give his scarves a closer look. What a blissful hour! I got lost on my way to his house, tucked away in the famed Nishijin district of Kyoto, long known as the textile center of Japan. Thankfully, he hopped on his bike and tracked me down a block or so from his home. I wasn't at all hard to spot, I'm sure, the clueless looking foreigner on a mountain bike, zigzagging through the streets. We sat on his tatami(rice straw)mat floors in the cramped living room of the house he was born in, surrounded by beautiful things in various stages of completion.
