A lesson in natural dyes! This beautiful purse or small tote bag is made using hand dyed charm squares which I purchase from a textiles artist in Suffolk England. She also gave me the recipes for doing my own and I plan to pick some plants this summer for my own fabrics. This bag is special in so many ways! It is made using the old and reborn "rag quilting' technique where the seams are on the exterior - I washed and dried the bag (so you know it's washable!) to get the seams all beautifully fuzzy and the fabric deliciously puckered. This technique is also unique in that the bag becomes self-lined. I used very pretty vintage kitchen fabric that features butterflies and other sweet flying creatures in a woodland scene. This fabric forms 4 of the squares in the interior of the bag - the rest of the lining squares are unbleached muslin. You will love the 'inside' of your bag as much as the outside. The look of the naturally dyed cotton squares is really unique - they look like suede or other textured fabric - it really shows the superiority of natural dyes and their beauty which cannot be duplicated in chemical dyes. The back is done in the same rag seam technique but with denim (stone washed) squares which I quilted for a really fabulous look. The closure is also too cute - it's the button and loop from a well worn pair of jeans. I embellished the button and loop with decorative flower stitching too! The shoulder straps are really great - they are in a luggage style handle where the handles stand up and look very purse-like too. This bag comes with a big big 'Earthy mushroom' wallet. Since there are no interior pockets in the bag I wanted to make a big, organized wallet to go with it. This wallet features the vintage woodland fabric and a mushroom applique. It has plenty of room for all your essentials - several credit card slots and other small pockets, room for cell phone, keys, cash, check book and pen. I also include a certificate with these naturally dyed bags - the certificate shows you what dyes where used in each charm square and explains a little about each of the dyes used.This is a soft bag - not stiff with interfacing or quilt batting. Dimensions: 15 inches wide at opening, 10 inches tall, 3 inches deep. Shoulder straps are 17 inches long or a 7 1/2 inch drop.
