You are bidding on FOUR of my hand painted 54mm Civil War Union Artillerymen manning a 10 lb Parrott Rifle, as they might have appeared at any battle in the Civil War! The Union Artillery began the War as the most professional of all the branches of service, and were supplied with the latest weaponry and technology of the time to make them the most effective Union armed service for the entire conflict! While battles are seldom won by the artillery, the Union Artillery on at least three occasions had a tremendous impact on the results of the work they performed: Hazel Grove at Chancellorsville, where they covered the Union retreat after Fighting Joe Hooker lost his nerve, right until he ordered them to abandon the position(!?!?!); at Gettysburg on Day 3, where they decimated Pickett's Charge as the brave Confederates marched across the mile wide field in an attempt to win the battle. Probably 25 to 30 percent of the Confederates were killed or wounded by the artillery as they crossed the field, reducing the effective force to less than 9,000 of the 12,000 or so who started the attack. And during the Seven Days Battles, again during a Union retreat (by McClellan this time), the Union Artillery stopped the Army Of Northern Virginia at Malvern Hill, which was probably the most effective use of artillery during the War.Included with this read more
