As I am being forced to "thin" out my various collections, I will offer many items featuring birds, foxes, lilies of the valley, roses, and violets over the next several weeks - including many fine jewelry, quilts, and porcelain items. This auction is for an older washboard that has been converted to a work of art featuring a hand-painted design of a primitive patchwork quilt and freshly washed laundry hanging on a clothesline, and beneath that, a Black Americana rendering of an Aunt Jemima-style Negro Mammy with a washtub overflowing with yet more clean clothes. The painting seems to be rendered on a particle-type board which has been inserted behind one side of the washboard to allow a more even surface for painting. Framed in a soft, unstained pine wood, the washboard has some lettering on the panel above the metal ridges, but alas it is mostly faded, and I am unable to accurately credit the maker (I've provided a photo in case your eyes are better than mine). Measures approx. 23-1/2" high by 14-1/3" wide by 1-1/3" deep; wire on back for hanging. This appears to be a child's washboard, or perhaps one designed for delicate items. Colors are bright, with NO color loss or fading; NO damage to the design or to the wood. Condition is Excellent; add $10.00 for careful shipping.
