Original Bunsyu Japanese Nobori Scene from Legend - Hand-painted Decorative Banner, Meiji era Antique Hand-painted Nobori - Originating on the battlefields of feudal Japan , nobori were banners used to identify individual units within an army. From those origins, nobori found their way into every day life, including becoming a popular decoration for festivals like Boys' Day in Japan . Boys' Day was a yearly celebration, taking place in early May and celebrating the health and growth of the boys of Japan . Traditionally families raised nobori over their houses, depicting heroes of legend or masculine paragons after which boys could model themselves. Because of the nobori that covered the rooftops of the city during the festival, it was also known as the Feast of Banners. This print is from a fantastic collection of Meiji era nobori we are pleased to offer in our auctions tonight. read more
