You are bidding on a beautiful hand turned HARD RED MAPLE BURL Box with Amboyna Burl Inset This unique box was 100% hand turned on a lathe using a beautiful piece of Spalted Hard Red Maple Burl and an Amboyna Burl inset in the lid A beautiful piece of heavy Hard Maple Burl that even the detailed photos can’t do it justice as it's extremely striking with all of the colors being displayed Maple Burls are very beautiful and have colorful and curly figure. This box is loaded with extraordinary colors and grain, and beautiful colors that wood turners love and hope to find in such a nice piece of premium Hard Maple Burl The box has many small burl inclusions and holes, plenty of color variation, unique shape definitely making this a one of a kind item This type of trinket box requires enormous precision and attention to detail to construct. As a result, most turners who make these boxes specialize in them, and typically make nothing else. The measure of a turner's skill in making a box usually lies in the fit of the lid. On a ring box or jewelry box you want the lid to fit loosely with a little play between it and the bottom so the lid is easy to remove. As you can imagine, it takes a great deal of time and attention to detail on every component to obtain a nice looking and proper functioning box and lid. The trinket boxes have a slightly tighter suction fitting lid requiring only one both hand to break the gentle suction between the top and bottom. This box tight fitting lid for a trinket box, and typically requires 2 hands to remove the lid. This is a small size box with a unique shape and storage space that makes it perfect for any of your small treasures. You may also just set it in a curio and never use it except as a beautiful and unique display piece. This box is just roughly 1 " tall, and has also has 2 1/2 " diameter. The base interior has a 2 " opening and is almost 1 " deep for storage space. A burl is an abnormal growth that typically grows on the outside of the tree and usually near the tree trunk. So during the turning process, natural flaws such as dark lines, imperfections, natural voids, knots, worm holes, insect art, etc. all adding to the uniqueness and beauty of the piece, are revealed. This piece of Red Maple Burl has many burl inclusions as well as stunning grain lines and figure throughout. I generally leave the wood as is, and just let nature show its beauty. This box has several areas that either have small voids, and small holes and areas that are missing wood. If these areas are an issue for you, this is not a box that would appeal to you. You will be shipped the exact item that is shown. Each piece is hand signed and dated by me on the bottom. I have been a woodworkerfor over 15 years, making everything from complete custom cabinetry, to bowls,boxes, and pens on the lathe. However, due to health issues, I now only turn projects on the lathe in order to give myself something to do for the few hours a day I can stand.
