This is a full sized (18 1/4") , hand carved, and hand painted Redbreasted Merganser. It is a hollowed body decoy carved in the traditional "slick" syle, that is, carved with only those details that delineate the bird and carved in a way to maximize strength on the thinner parts. I have been carving and painting decoys for over thirty years and admire the "traditional" decoy carving rather than the overly realistic carving done by competitive carvers. This bird is carved in Eastern White Cedar, a traditinal decoy carving wood. The bird is painted in acrylic and sealed with a poly seal for protection. The eyes are a traditional red, 10 mm taxidermy glass. I never carve or paint any decoy in the exact same way as as each is an individual signed work.
