Handforged Mammen viking hand axe SCA celtic engrave

This is a historically accurate reproduction of a viking hand axe excavated from a barrow near Mammen, Denmark. The barrow dates to sometime in the 10th century. T is only one difference between this and the original. The original has actual silver inlay filling the celtic style engravings on the sides of the axe. This axe has a silvery-goldish-white (? Interesting. Very hard to tell.) enamel highlighting the engravings. Very attractive against the black background of the axe face. Using silver on this axe, like the original, would have been prohibitavely expensive for most. This simple, small style was typical of the hand axes carried by the vikings of this period. It would have been used for throwing, as an off hand weapon, or just as a back up should one's sword or battle axe fail him. I bought it, along with a francesca and a tomahawk, to compare the various styles of throwing axes, and evaluate them. This one was just too perfect and too attractive a piece to use for experimentation. So, I never threw it, decided to sell it, and will at some point get a viking style throwing axe that is just plain and practical for my purposes. For display, however, or use (should you feel the need to throw it), this is a superb throwing axe. Specs are as follows...... Blade length: 4" Handle Length: 17 3/4 in.
