This magnificent repousse' Aztec calendar plate is exquisitely detailed and 14" in diameter. It is 1 1/2 lbs of pure sterling silver and of the highest quality workmanship. Made in Mexico, not pressed, but hand hammered. Notice, if you will, that where a motif is repeated, each piece varies a bit, indicating that the artist used individual hammer blows and not dies to create this masterpiece. The Aztec name for the original stone calendar is Cuauhxicalli (Eagle Bowl), but it is universally known as the Aztec Calendar or Sun Stone. It was during the reign of the 6th Aztec monarch in 1479 that this stone was carved and dedicated to the principal Aztec deity: the sun. The stone has both mythological and astronomical significance. This magnificent piece references this stone and replicates in silver a mysterious epoch of the American continent history. In excellent condition.
