Rare and Fine Lidded Redware Jar with Ornamental Handles and Profuse Manganese Spot Decoration, Eastern Pennsylvania origin, mid 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with tooled banding throughout, the handles embellished with heavy diagonal scoring, culminating in applied clay acorns. Original lid with incised circular accents and raised strap handle, also featuring heavy scoring and applied acorn terminals. The handles on the jar and lid have an interesting piece-meal construction, in which one half of each handle is applied longways and subsequently conjoined to the second half, resulting in a prominent ridge running down the center of each. The surfaces of the jar and lid are strikingly-decorated with bold manganese spotting and covered in a clear lead glaze. The profuse spotted decoration and wonderful, ornamental handles create a jar carrying a strong folk art presence. We are aware of only one other jar of this type, a stripe-and-spot-decorated example offered by David Wheatcroft in 2004. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Jar in very nice condition with chipping to base and typical minor wear to rim and handle. Chips to edge of lid and one small chip to flange on underside of lid. H (excluding lid) 6 1/4" ; H (including lid) 8".
