You are looking at an amazingly intricate fretwork clock case with a clockworks, thermometer, and barometer. It was made by a local artisan in the last few years and I purchased it at an estate auction of the man's equipment. I really didn't get a chance to look it over until afterwords - what a beautiful piece! Its hard for me to imagine the amount of time and patience and skill it took to construct and finish it. The wood he used is some type of three ply material with veneer on the outer layers and a filler wood product, possibly balsa in the middle. I am not really familiar with it but the effect is that it 's very lightweight and apparently work s well f or this type of fretwork. Notice not only the cut-out work on the assembled panels but also the details in the gable crown and added decoration. Another attractive fea ture is that the decorative pan els behin d the instru ments, the front panel behin d that, the gable crown and the carved protruding edges of the back panel are all on different vertical levels so the case has noticeable depth and interest. The case is about 19" tall x 11-1/2" wi de and 3 -1/2" deep and the instruments are about 2-3/4" diameter.
