Magnificent Handpainted Icon from Russia ~ The Crucifixion This icon is similar in composition to the 13th century version. The artist has portrayed a vision with tremendous spiritual impact. Christ's head is bent to the left and he is surrounded by angels, Mary, apostles. the Roman guard and saints. This spellbinding icon delivers an overt and emphatic spiritual message. We believe it was completed at the Moscow School, it is superbly hand painted using muted shades against a gold leaf background. The grooves on the top and bottom date this piece to the 19th century. It was during this period the artist put grooves into the wood to prevent warping. This icon is truly magnificient and still in very good condition. It does have some nail holes around the rims of the front which do not detract from the this work. Icon measures 13" tall x 11" wide. The artist used egg tempura, gesso, gold leaf background.
