Exceptional unframed original WILHELM VON GLOEDEN sepia photograph on textured paper of a nude boy overlooking the sea taken at TAORMINA in SICILY probably sometime during the 1900-1920 period. Possibly of gay interest. The photo itself measures 6 and 1/2 inches by 8 and 3/4 inches and is mounted on a heavy piece of period gray cardboard mat (11 inches by 14 inches) no doubt for original framing purposes. Signed in brown ink in the lower left corner (see photo) and handwritten in old script on the back of the mat TAORMINA. Because the photo is glued to the mat, I do not know if it bears an ink stamp on its reverse. The lower left corner of the photo has come free from the mat (see photo) but only a small part of the back of the photo can be seen and I refuse to risk damaging the piece by trying to remove it from the mat after 100 years of being glued down. T is also an interesting glob of the same brown ink as the signature located on the larger rock formation together with a clearly visible inky fingerprint (perhaps Von Gloenden's own fingerprint--see photo but much clearer to see in person than in my photo). T are also a few sporadically scattered tiny spots of the same brown ink over the surface of the photo (not significant). The heavily textured paper is identical to photos I have seen of the textured paper he sometimes used in his Taormina photographs. CONDITION: The old cardboard mat shows some wear to the corners and edges. The photograph itself is in excellent condition and appears to have been well protected over the years--no rips, tears or stains. As previously mentioned the lower left corner of the photo has come free from the mat. INSURED PRIORITY SHIPPING: $18.50. Please check out my other items I currently have up for auction.
