Geo. T. Flanagan, Chicago, Il Dictionary Stand Back in the days of door-to-door sales, Funk & Wagnalls reached thousands and thousands of American homes selling their books. I believe this Geo. T. Flanagan dictionary/book stand was offered to purchasers of dictionaries. When this dictionary stand was purchased at auction in Pennsylvania some years ago, it held an 1896 single volume dictionary from Funk & Wagnalls (not included in this auction) dated 1896. The official F&W receipt was affixed to the inside cover of the dictionary with a date of December 1899. So this information would lead me to be comfortable saying this dictionary stand is circa 1900. The dictionary I that has always been on this book stand is currently available in one of my other auctions. The dictionary stand is in very good condition standing 43" high and 22" at the base. Wooden casters are in excellent condition and opening spring mechanism is still functional. While t is normal wear and tear on the stand, the paint is in remarkably good condition, as well. T are two primary flaws you should be aware of. First, a piece of the cast metal book spine-support is missing (circled in photo below). Second, the passive locking mechanism on the right folding book support is like a hair trigger. You really need a heavy book in place to keep it in the open position. read more
