I may be small but I am a very sweet example of a 3 color ikat. Very fine ikat has been rendered on this commercial thread using aniline dyes to create this Kaifnaik or hook and rhomba motif in which each 'hook' represents a member of the weavers clan and every 'dot' a totemic guardian spirit. Red, orange and blue & yellow in thin stripes on the edges. 140cm long x 16.5cm wide. 45" long x 6.5" wide. This very effective image has been achieved by tying small bunches of thread in the weft then dying it and weaving to create this selandang or betâe(tm)ana and represents traditional clothing as it can be very cold in the mountains of central Timor and is soft and smooth to the touch. Worn by both men and women either around the neck or on top of the head to help with balancing pots of water, bundles of sticks for fires or branches of feed for cows all of which must often be carried up to 5 miles daily.Ikat may be washed in the delicate cycle of your washing machine or hand washed using wool wash and will often outlast you and me. Care instructions come with your treasure. Can be posted flat in a large envelope. US/Canada/Middle East=$4.50 France/UK/Spain/Rest of World=$4.50 Asia/Pacific=$3.75 Australia =$2.50 You are welcome to combine shipping. Insurance or registered additional. TIMOR UPDATE 2008 What a wonderful journey my daughter and I have had both in terms of craft and artists and in witnessing the fruits of seeds sown. Testing and distributing 200 pairs of eye glasses was a massive task but one that I am keen to repeat. How can I describe the smile that leapt or crept over peoples faces as their world came into focus again. Any spare eye or sun glasses you have or come across are most welcome. The babies section at the orphanage is looking great with water dispensers and milk powder now always available. It is time to look to the welfare of the 1-10 year olds, the kids that do not get collected after the 2 year care period so generously offered by the Ume Manekan. You are welcome to add a dollar or 5 to your purchase and be assured that it goes directly to the kids. Sadly the huge rains caused the crops to fail in some areas but on the upside the pumpkin and bean seeds that I have been distributing for 5 years now have finally adapted. I trust, in time, that the Timorese come to realize that a plate of vegetables provides both energy and nutrition far above their standard rice and cassava fare and with rice prices trebling I hope that the change will come sooner rather than later. Mind you the villagers are constantly telling me that they do not feel full unless they have eaten a huge plate of rice and are amazed that we in the west can survive on veges and meat. After ironing out a few kinks and bumps I have established a KAPOK pillow project and it echoâe(tm)s all the things that I have in my business criteria. Sustainable, low impact, home based industry thatâe(tm)s good for us too! And the knives that I distributed have had a positive effect on the craft without altering the essence that makes Timorese handcraft so unique. The free listing tool.
