These four diaries all belonged to David L. Boyce who was a sailor living in Henderson New York. He was born in 1832, had a wife named Velora and a son named Milton. I found David’s father’s will on line which gives a bit of genealogy where the family is concerned; /ny/jefferson/wills/v12/boyce-david.txt The diaries represent the years 1874, 1877, 1878 and 1879. All of them have to do with his trips on board the ship, usually sailing between the months of April through November; as weather would allow. The route he traveled mostly was on Lake Ontario from Henderson to Oswego and also on Lake Erie. Some of the places mentioned along the way are Long Point, Point Pelee Lighthouse, Turtle Island, Allenburg, Oswego, Grand Haven, Port Dalhousie, St. Catherine, Cleveland, Sandusky, Toledo, Grand River, Port Colborne, Green Island, Marble Head, and more. I believe he sails under Captain Joiner, as he talks about being with him quite a bit. Further research needs to be done on that end though. The diaries have an entry for every day, mostly a paragraph or two. I’ve taken a few entries from each diary to give you a better idea of their contents. But as my description got too long I chose fewer from the last two diaries……. 1874 “January 22 nd , Wind south and the weather very warm. Snow all gone. Sick all of last night and today. Dispatch came this morning from Armstrong that Capt. E. Rogers died this morning at 8 A.M. and Mr. George Kilby died about 6 P.M.” “February 14 th , Wind northwest, fresh in the forenoon and the weather fine. The tug starting with us and the Hammond when up to the elbow. The wind came so hard from the westward we had to let go and we did not get up to the city until dark. Found a large fleet here and nothing doing.” /~rowlett/lighthouse/onso.htm “May 21 st , Wind northerly and the weather fine. Commenced painting the second coat this morning. Attended a Spirit Circle at Capt. Butterfield’s in the evening.” (By Spirit Circle I believe he means a séance) “June 3 rd , Wind fresh from the south and the weather fine. Got unloaded at 4 P.M. Towed to the salt dock and commenced taking in salt. The new schooner from Henderson, The Jenny Whites, left here at 8 P.M. for Chicago.” “July 23 rd , Wind light from the southward and the weather very warm.
