This is an amazing lot of ephemera that all belonged to the Birdsall and Lockman family of Ontario New York. I would say that most of the items have to do with Celia Birdsall and her Uncle Ephraim Lockman. On the genealogical web sites I found that in the 1850 census showed father and mother, Matthias (b.1807) and Genett ( b. 1808) Lockman living in Ontario with their son Ephraim D. Lockman (b. 1838) and Francis G. Lockman (b. 1841). In the 1860 census it shows Matthias, Gerrell (Genett), Ephraim, and now Francis Birdsall and her husband William (b. 1836). Also living there are Helen A. Lockman (b. 1843) and Selia (Celia) A. Lockman (b. 1859). Ephraim is listed on this census as a sailor and William as a shoemaker. With all that said, it looks like Francis Lockman married William Birdsall and had a daughter Celia. Just wanted to show how all these pieces tied in. There are two handwritten diaries both belonging to Celia; 1872 & 1873. However the 1872 diary has entries in it for 1878 and neither of them are full. The 1873 diary has about 128 days worth of entries and the 1872 diary has 120 days worth of entries for the year 1878. All entries are very charming as Celia is only 13 with the first diary and 19 with her second. In her 2 nd diary she teaching school. A little more information from the web showed that Celia and her sister Amelia had their own business as Milliner’s in 1893 called “C & A Birdsall” And that Celia was divorced by 1920 and living with her parents. She died in 1928; /cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=57383786 My favorite piece in this lot is what I found in the back pocket of Celia’s diary. It’s the most charming primitive cut folding paper dolls. It’s hand drawn on the front and the back. I’ve scanned a photo of the front. Folded it shows just one doll or person and unfolded it shows several holding hands, unfolding like an accordion. Very charming. As far as the rest of the pieces, there are about 15. Most of those are handwritten letters and most from Ephraim in the 1860’s and 70’s. One however is a very tiny letter and envelope addressed to Celia from her father. This letter dates 1864. The letters from Ephraim are very interesting because he’s become a doctor and opened up his own practice in Buffalo New York. One letter in particular describes his practice and location. On the outside of one of the envelopes is an additional note that says “From Ephraim Lockman, my grandmother’s brother. Studied at Western Reserve M…” The diaries measure about 2 ¼” x 3 ¼” and I scanned a photo of the diaries and the “little” letter together so you can see how small it is. I’ve taken excerpts from both diaries and a few of the letters to give you a better idea of the contents…….. 1873 (Diary. Most of her entries are before June. There are also 6 pressed leaves between the pages of this diary) “January 8 th , Vit was here and filled out the family record. Orland was here. I went up to the corner saw Mate Proceus. Mr. Gibson was to grandma’s cleaning the billiard room. The man got through yesterday.” “January 21 st , Andrew Mccrea’s boys funeral was today. Went down to Aunt Ella’s a visiting. Mr. Bastion died tonight. Grandpa Cooper is seventy years old today.” “February 4 th , I went up to Grandmas. Odekirk got my cradle for his baby. Jennie came up and saw Stevie tonight. He has not got the measles.” “February 20 th , Went up to practice in morning and afternoon. Aunt Ell was here. Were down to Sander’s after a basket. Odekirk had his exhibition broke down.” “February 25 th , John Sager went to Rochester. I went to Johnson’s after some thread in the morning. One year ago today Emma Reed was buried. Ma and I went down to Ann’s.” “April 3 rd , Stevie came down from the city to stay. I am down to Jennie’s. Came home in the evening. Ma moved my bed up stairs.” “May 17 th , The children a...
