HANSON Attr. Large American Landscape Oil Painting

This exceptional, large oil on canvas is signed " P. Han." and has been attributed to the noted American landscape painter, Peter Hanson (1821-1887) . Measures 30" by 46 1/8" by 1 1/8". Depicted is a dramatic river valley landscape with modest cabin beside a shallow river. Fast moving clouds are passing overhead, as if after a recent storm, and the lighting of the landscape varies wonderfully from the sky to the mountain tops to the darker foreground. We've photographed the work at three different exposure settings to capture the painted detail in the background (sky and mountain tops), middle (cabin) and foreground (rocky riverfront and foliage).
Additional images forwarded upon request. This painting was just purchased at estate sale, and we know nothing of its history or provenance. Canvas has been professionally relined with archival tape added around the edge of the stretcher. Note in our image below how the restorer left an open area on the rear of the canvas, showing the trademark of the canvas maker. This stamped or stencil-painted mark reads "SUPERIOR COATING...WARRANTED...ALL LINEN". Hanson was born in Denmark in 1821 and is said to have emigrated to the United States around 1847. His is known to have painted scenes of the White Mountains in New Hampshire and other locations throughout New England and New York state. He is believed to have settled in Brooklyn, NY. His works come up at auction periodically, and the highest American auction sale is believed to be a $2,542 sale (lot #30) at Skinner on 5/9/97. That work is very similar to our painting here, measuring 30" by 50" and depicting a very similar river valley. For more information, please contact us or visit to view the piece sold at Skinner.
