Nelson Mandela - My Robben Island Series I 'My Robben Island' is the title of artwork by ex-president and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela. The Robben Island Series was sketched and completed by Nelson Mandela between March and June 2002. The series is made up of 5 sketches and a written motivation of subjects from Robben Island. This auction is for the single picture The Harbour. They are images that Mr Mandela found deeply meaningful during the period of his incarceration on the island. The sketches have been executed in simple black charcoal lines with selected elements highlighted in pure pastel colours. My Robben Island Series I This series consists of an edition of 500 signed and numbered colour lithographs and 50 artists proofs, made from hand-drawn colour separations by Nelson Mandela On the 7th February 2003 in the courtyard of his old prison, 200 guest ( invited guests include HRH Price of Wales, Posh and David Beckham, Sting, Bono, Mick Jagger, Tiger Woods, Bernie Ecclestone and Richard Branson ) the artwork was launched. This sketch depicts a view of Robben Island where new prisoners would first set foot on the island. Nelson Mandela made a decision to highlight the ocean and landing stage in colour, two elements which clearly have significant symbolism in his interpreta tion.
