Included with the purchase of this token will be copies of the original work of Wesley Cox, Sr., my father. He did extensive die studies of many hard times tokens, as mentioned by Russell Rulau in several publications. Some samples of this work can be seen in Rulau’s “Standard Catalog of Hard TimesTokens 1832-1844” in Appendix III, pages 147-182. For this token, the case is made that Hiram W. Hayden made the HT419 die and not William Eaves, as is commonly believed. This is done with painstaking scans of the tokens and accurate enlargements of the images and comparisons of letter and number styles, outline punch shapes and placements and so on. For a serious collector, this is a meaningful addition to a collection, even if you do not agree with my father’s conclusions. Shown in this listing is a sample of his work on this token. R6 is an old rarity rating that may or may not still apply. High rarity numbers are also very subjective at any time. This is a very rare token in outstanding condition in any case. For the purposes of these die studies, this token was cleaned in the mid to late 1990s in a non-abrasive way.
