1947 Gourmet Magazine - - Light Blue Hardbound Volume with All 12 Issues One of the "Top Five" Single Years of Gourmet's 69 Years Post-War America's Culinary Scene In Excellent Condition ----------------------------------------------------------- Offered is, in my opinion, Gourmet Magazine's twelve 1947 issues is one of the " Top Five " single years of the 69 years of Gourmet Magazine in publication: the twelve issues of eating, dining and travel in Post-War America. Not to mention, the magazines as a mirror onto the culture, styles, preferences, and "state-of-the-art" marketing/advertising worlds of the 1947 U.S. of A. "Classic" in the sense that in this one year, 1947, were gatd together at Gourmet, some of the men and women who would become the greatest food and wine personalities of the next 30 years. Trader Vic; Lucius Beebe; Stephen Longstreet; Frank Schoonmaker (wine); Clementine Paddleford; Ruth Harkness; Louis P. de Guoy; Gates Hubbard; Idwal Jones; Robert P. Tristram Coffin, and more. "Classic" in the sense of the high quality of the articles, the fact that all twelve issue covers (and most articles) are meticulously hand illustrated, and the breadth of the culinary subject matter covered, and covered nes plus ultra. "Classic" in the sense that (if one is as obsessed with cooking; recipes; and excellent culinary narrative, as I am) one wonders just what it might have been like to work in the offices of Gourmet Magazine in 1947 (at that time, situated in the penthouse suite of the Pierre Hotel in New York City). 1947. Over six decades past. This is the complete, original, light blue hardbound volume, with " Gourmet: The Magazine of Good Living " embossed in gold lettering on the front; and " Gourmet - Vol. 7 - 1947 " embossed in gold lettering on the spine. A 600-page (all 12 issues) "snapshot" of the 1947 American (& European) culinary world; from the vantage point of Gourmet Magazine's renowned contributing editors & writers of that time - - Iles Brody's "Specialites de la Maison (New York City restaurant reviews); Charles H. Baker, Jr. ("South American Gentleman's Companion - Parts I thru VII"); Ruth Harkness ("Mexican Mornings - Parts I thru IX"); Stephen Longstreet ("The Times of My Life" and "Long Way Home"); Louis P. deGuoy's monthly features ("Oh, the Roast Beef!"; "A Conqueror's Dish"; "The Berry Basket"; "Quest for Shrimp", and many more); Gates Hubbard's monthly column ("Truffles & Trifles"); Idwal Jones ("Ho-0t Tamales"; "Dinner with Mr. Stevenson"; "A Dish for the Viceroy"; "Dining with Bret Harte"); Lucius Beebe's monthly and legendary "Along the Boulevards" columns, filled with observations of the culinary scenes/trends in 1947; Frank Schoonmaker, the greatest wine critic of all time, with articles titled "In Praise of Alsace"; "Return to Bordeaux"; "Vin Ordinaire in America"; "Red Wines of the Cote d'Or"); Clementine Paddleford's monthly series, "Food Flashes", to run continuously for years tafter in Gourmet Magazine ; and many, many more editors and contributors, stories, menus and travel articles - - - by some of the finest food writers and critics in Gourmet's , and America's, culinary history. Filled with restaurant reviews; each issue with a fabulous, detailed, hand-colored cover illustration; numerous hand-sketches and article drawings by Henry J. Stahlhut; and many, ever more complex and ever more simple recipes, all indexed at the back of each issue. Each of the twelve magazines [I didn't have room to include all twelve in the photos] is in pristine to mint condition. The binding is the original, marbled-blue, binder for Gourmet Magazine 1947; tight, with very minor wear at the hardbound binder corners. No missing or ripped pages; no tears; no stains or markings; simply in excellent condition, esp. considering its 62 year age. In my opinion, one of the "Top Five" years in Gourmet Magazine's 69 years in publication. Highly collectible, filled with ...
