Free Shipping & Insurance Harper's Weekly Newspapers. New York Complete Bound Volume, 52 Complete Issues from 1861 These are originals, Not Reprints. (The reprints done in the 1960's are clearly marked as Re-Issues on the covers) How Did they Survive ? Over the centuries, libraries had newspapers bound into volumes so they could be saved and used as reference material. When microfilm came into practical use in 1953, the original newspapers were replaced by the new film technology. Most of the originals were dumped, but some survived. Before 1870, "rag stock" was used as the paper. It is much more durable than pulp paper used later does not deteriorate. So newspapers from earlier times survived in great shape. T are no missing pages, and no paper loss or chipping. You can turn the pages and not damage them. Cover has normal wear as you can see in the photo. All 52 issues are in great shape. Many Abe Lincoln prints on the covers and inside pages....cover and middle two pages showing his Innuaguration, and several more than the ones I show in the photos. A cover and two double center prints of the beginning of The Civil War at Fort Sumter. Two double centers of Bull Run.Full Print of Jefferson Davis' Swearing in as Southern President. Tons of Civil War prints, and reporting. The 12 photos are just a small sampling of hundreds of prints. Important Note: The method used in binding this volume is the way we love. T are no strings going thru the middle double page with the large prints in each issue, so you do not have the little holes in the middle of the double size print which is in each issue. That is good news. T is an old sticker inside the hard front cover that's tells the name of the company that did the binding for the library. It is Siebert & Lilley. Opera House Building. High Street. Columbus, Ohio.I am kinda' hoping, since this one is still bound together so nicely, that someone might buy it that wants to keep the volume whole, and not cut issues out.Bill Smith Check out my other items !
