One of the most prominent American illustrators of his era, Harrison Cady (1877-1970) was especially well known for his collaborations with the children's book author Thornton Burgess. Between the late 1940s and the mid 1950s, this collaboration took the form of a regular newspaper feature titled "Bedtime Stories", with Burgess providing the stories and Cady the illustrations. This original pen and ink drawing, dated November 28, 1955, is the illustration which Cady provided for the Burgess story which appeared in various newspapers on that date. The drawing of two grouse measures 7 1/4 inches by 5 7/8 inches (sheet size), and is professionally housed in a mat measuring a total of 14 3/8 inches by 13 inches. The drawing, which is attached to its mat at the top, is signed by Cady at the lower right; at the lower left, the artist has inscribed the date of the drawing. Along the bottom of the sheet, the artist has written the caption for the drawing ("Just follow me, replied his mother. She started to lead the way") The drawing is accompanied by a photocopy of the Burgess story which relates to the drawing. This fine original pen and ink drawing is in generally fine condition, with only a little soiling and minor imperfections to the edges of the sheet.
