A BIG PENNY?? LOOK AGAIN ... It's a blast from the past! Thisnice medal/medallion/paperweight is an advertisement for the Hartford Fire Insurance Company Hartford (HFIC), Connecticut. As the oldest independent insurance company in the nation , The HFIC has been a stalwart mainstay in the American insurance industry for over 200 years. Several notable historical figures are recorded as having been HFIC policy holders - Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln, and Babe Ruth to name a few. This piece is a great representation of this history, Hartford Connecticut, and a wonderful collectible of insurance memorabilia. This is a good chunk of metal weighing in at 10.8 oz. It's diameter is 3 3/4" and thickness about 3/8". It's probably made of bronze. Engraved along the edge is "Whitehead-Hoag", one of the largest advertisement firms in the world at the turn of the century. I've tried to capture the details of the awesome relief of this piece in the photos. At the top of one side of this large medallion are the numbers 1810-1921. A bull elk stands poised in between the numbers - an apropos symbol for the stalwart, robust company, The Hartford, as it is known today.
