HARVEY OTIS YOUNG American, 1840-1901 Morning on Cook's Peak, New Mexico". Signed and dated lower right "Harvey Young '92". Titled on reverse. "Cooks (or Cookes) Peak towers above the southwestern New Mexico desert in splendid isolation, forming a landmark visible for many miles. The granite peak makes a distinctive rocky crag reminiscent of the Matterhorn. A series of low foothills connects the Cooks Range with the larger Black Range to the north. For centuries, the Apaches used the peak as a lookout" (From ) Oil on board, 20½" x 30" sight. Framed."Condition: Soiled varnish layer. UV light reveals no obvious restoration. There is also acid lines from the former backing material that has bled through to the oil surface. The painting was possibly used as an illustration as the sky is not painted.
