It would be difficult to imagine a more elegant porcelain dinnerware piece than this pure white antique soup tureen produced by Haviland & Co. more than a century ago. It is a sculptured rectangle that puffs gently out over the base and forms scallops at the corners. The knobbed lid follows the same contours, and includes an opening that allows a ladle to rest comfortably against the rim. Gleaming gold covers the handles as well as the molded floral pattern that decorates the lid and opposite corners of the bowl. The tureen measures 10 inches long at the bowl rim, and 12 ½ inches including the handles. It is 7 ¾ inches across and just over 4 ¼ inches tall. The lid overhangs slightly on all sides for a very graceful appearance. Bowl and lid together are approximately 7 ½ inches tall to the top of the knob handle. The green backstamp under the glaze dates this piece from 1876 to 1889 according to my research. “Haviland & Co. Limoges” is also overstamped in red on the bottom of the bowl and underneath the lid. As I understand the history, all of these marks were associated with the original Haviland factory in Limoges during the tenure of David Haviland. The number 12 is also impressed in the clay on the bottom of the bowl. This soup tureen is in fabulous antique condition, with no chips, cracks, crazing, scratches or stains. The read more
